Bitcoin DeFi Security Enhanced - Loot Stock Hashrate Share Expanded

  • The DeFi on the Bitcoin blockchain is evolving into a safer and lower-cost option, thanks in part to contributions from the Layer 2 project Loot Stock. This was highlighted in Messari's latest report.
  • According to Messari, Rootstock is secured by 81% of Bitcoin's total hashrate.
  • The momentum of Loot Stock will help lay the foundation for the expansion of Bitcoin DeFi throughout the remainder of 2025.

Messari states that the central role is played by Lootstock. Lootstock is one of the oldest Layer 2 projects on the Bitcoin blockchain.

Rootstock is currently secured by 81% of the total hashrate of the Bitcoin blockchain, which means that miners with a significant share of the hashrate are also approving layer 2 transactions. This figure was only 56% before Foundry and Spiderpool, the world's 1st and 6th largest mining pools respectively, entered in February.

Messari also observes that the transaction fees for Rootstock are 95% cheaper than the average Bitcoin blockchain transaction and 55% cheaper than the Ethereum blockchain.

Loot Stock is one of the many projects aiming to enhance the practicality of the Bitcoin blockchain through the expansion of DeFi offerings using smart contracts, and it adopts "BitVMX," an improved version of the BitVM (Bitcoin Virtual Machine) programming language. Other notable layer 2 projects on the Bitcoin blockchain include Stacks and BOB (Build on Bitcoin).

This project is also connected to the bridge protocol LayerZero, allowing Loot stock native applications to connect to dozens of other blockchains, including Ethereum and Solana. Messari states that its momentum is laying the foundation for the expansion of BTCFi (Bitcoin Finance) throughout the remainder of 2025.

Messari analyst Andrew Yang pointed out that "as BTCFi continues to grow, Lootstock is in a favorable position for broader adoption through continuous investment in builder education and incentive programs, in addition to core upgrades such as a 60% reduction in transaction fees."
